The Galtee Mountains Special Area of Conservation protects one of Ireland’s highest and most ecologically diverse mountain ranges, offering dramatic hiking, rare wildlife, and tranquil wilderness escapes.
Situated in the south-central part of Ireland, spanning County Tipperary and parts of County Limerick, the Galtee Mountains Special Area of Conservation (SAC) encompasses the largest inland mountain range in Munster. Rising to its highest peak, Galtymore at 917 meters, the area is renowned for its rugged terrain, deep corries, and sweeping panoramic views across the Irish countryside. The SAC was designated to protect the rich biodiversity of this upland habitat, including blanket bogs, upland heath, limestone pavements, and species-rich grasslands. It harbors important populations of red grouse, peregrine falcon, hen harrier, and the rare Kerry slug, making it an ecological sanctuary of national significance. Historically, the Galtees have been utilized for traditional sheep grazing and continue to hold cultural importance with numerous heritage sites such as ancient stone walls and ruins of old mountain settlements. Recreationally, the area is popular for hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife watching, with well-established trails leading to summits and through pristine woodlands. The relative remoteness and natural beauty attract outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and exceptional nature experiences. Visitor appeal is enhanced by the peaceful atmosphere, diverse habitats, and the chance to discover Ireland’s wild uplands in a less crowded setting compared to coastal parks. The SAC also supports ongoing conservation efforts to maintain its habitats in favourable condition.
